SPM Biology Guide | Paper Format, Marks, and Answering Tips

Biology is one of the pure science subjects in the Malaysian KSSM curriculum, taken by most science stream students in Form 4 and Form 5 alongside Chemistry, Physics, and Additional Mathematics. The SPM examination test it under the subject code 4551 which consists of two written papers and a practical paper.

The subject teaches students how living things function; from cells and enzymes to human body systems, from plants to ecosystems and from the nature of inheritance to the study of genetics, rewarding those who can understand a process clearly, as well as those who can remember the details of it.

The outcome of an SPM Biology exam may not only affect the student's exam but also his/her further educational studies and courses in various institutions such as medical, pharmacy, and biotechnology courses. It is best to note that a lot of the schools will even train students using SPM trial papers for Biology so that they will be able to practise answering questions from the real test before the actual examination.

This guide breaks down the SPM Biology format paper by paper. For an overview of the whole exam, including the timetable and how results work, see our Complete Guide to SPM.

SPM Biology Format at a Glance

Paper Duration Questions Marks
Biology Paper 1 (4551/1) 1 hour 15 minutes 40 objective (multiple-choice) questions 40
Biology Paper 2 (4551/2) 2 hours 30 minutes Section A: 8 structured questions
Section B: answer 1 of 2
Section C: 1 compulsory question
100
Biology Paper 3 (4551/3) 45 minutes 1 structured practical item 15

All three papers draw on the full syllabus from both Form 4 and Form 5, and the papers are bilingual, so you can answer in either Bahasa Melayu or English.

What SPM Biology Covers: Form 4 and Form 5 Chapters

KSSM Biology syllabus has 15 chapters in Form 4 and it has 13 chapters in Form 5.

Chapter Form 4 Form 5
1 Introduction to Biology and Laboratory Rules Organisation of Plant Tissues and Growth
2 Cell Biology and Organisation Leaf Structure and Function
3 Movement of Substances across a Plasma Membrane Nutrition in Plants
4 Chemical Composition in a Cell Transport in Plants
5 Metabolism and Enzymes Response in Plants
6 Cell Division Sexual Reproduction in Flowering Plants
7 Cellular Respiration Adaptations of Plants in Different Habitats
8 Respiratory Systems in Humans and Animals Biodiversity
9 Nutrition and the Human Digestive System Ecosystem
10 Transport in Humans and Animals Environmental Sustainability
11 Immunity in Humans Inheritance
12 Coordination and Response in Humans Variation
13 Homeostasis and the Human Urinary System Genetic Technology
14 Support and Movement in Humans and Animals
15 Sexual Reproduction, Development and Growth in Humans and Animals

SPM questions link topics across both years, so revise Form 4 chapters alongside Form 5 rather than leaving them until the end. A Section C question on plant transport, for example, may also expect you to recall what you learned about the movement of substances across a membrane in Form 4.

Biology Paper 1 (4551/1): Objective Questions

Biology Paper 1 consists of 1 hour 15 minutes and 40 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) worth 40 marks in total. Answer each question and shade your choice in the objective answer booklet. Questions cover from recalling a fact or a term to reading a diagram, interpreting a graph and experimental data to applying the concept to a new situation.

If you do not "get stuck", that comes out to approximately two minutes per question. Most of the time, the middle questions that require recalling information take a long time, so it helps to do the easier ones first.

Answering tip: Don’t leave any question blank. Even if you don’t know the answer, it’s better to guess with a 25% chance of getting it right than not at all. If one is taking a long time, make your best guess, record it on the question paper and return to it when you have completed the others.

Biology Paper 2 (4551/2): Structured and Essay Questions

Biology Paper 2 carries the most marks (100) and is the longest (2 hours 30 minutes). It is broken up into three parts:

  • Section A (60 marks): 8 structured questions – all items must be answered – each worth 6 – 9 marks. Short answer questions are answered in the provided blocks, typically with reference to a diagram, table of data and/or experiment.
  • Section B (20 marks): Two questions to choose from, answer one. These require more extended answers, for instance, describing a process, contrasting two structures or using a concept in a new context.
  • Section C (20 marks): One compulsory question, worth 20 marks. Typically it requires you to link concepts from multiple topics and use them in a practical situation.

Where appropriate, diagrams, tables and graphs are acceptable as answers and all working should be displayed. A scientific or graphing calculator (not programmed) will be permitted.

Tip: Marks given for each question are a guide to the amount of writing required. A 2-mark question typically requires two points, not one long answer. Use the correct biological terms, as SPM marking schemes give marks for certain keywords and an answer which explains the correct idea in 'vague' language will lose marks.

Tip: For Section B, thoroughly read all questions before answering, including all sub-parts. Choose the one you are able to answer all parts of with confidence rather than one that has a more straightforward first question. In Section C, have two or three minutes to plan your points, before you begin writing.

Biology Paper 3 (4551/3): The Practical Test

Students carrying out an experiment in a school lab to prepare for the SPM Biology practical test

Biology Paper 3 is a practical examination that focuses on practical work done in the school laboratory and is part of the Science Practical Test, which is given a few weeks prior to the written papers. The Science Practical Test for SPM 2026 is conducted from 16th to 18th of November. Attendance is mandatory and absence will have an impact on the end of course Biology grade.

The test will be 45 minutes in duration. The first five minutes are for checking apparatus and materials, reading the question and planning the experiment, leaving about 40 minutes to run the experiment and record your answers. It has one structured item with a rubric for 15 marks. Two things will be evaluated, namely: science process skills include observing, measuring, recording data, drawing graphs, making inferences and how well you handle the apparatus; manipulative skills include how accurately and safely you work with the apparatus.

Only a few schools will provide hands-on sessions or two prior to the test. The recorded videos of typical Biology experiments can be useful between those sessions to help visualize each step and the apparatus used, which makes the actual experiment more familiar.

Answering tip: Good presentation of results is a key part of Paper 3 marks. Label the axes and the quantity on the axes show the unit, give each graph a title and label the axes, use a scale which fills at least 50% of the graph paper, draw a line or curve that is smooth. Put units in the headings of tables but not beside each number. When variables are required, identify them as manipulated, responding, and constant variables.

How Your SPM Biology Grade Is Calculated

Your SPM Biology grade is based on all three papers combined. Paper 1 is worth 40 marks, Paper 2 is worth 100, and Paper 3 is worth 15, giving a raw total of 155 marks. A simple way to estimate where you stand is to convert your combined score into a percentage:

Formula: (Paper 1 + Paper 2 + Paper 3) ÷ 155 × 100. For example, 32 marks in Paper 1, 68 in Paper 2, and 12 in Paper 3 adds up to 112. That’s 112 ÷ 155 × 100, or roughly 72%.

Treat that figure as a rough guide to your likely grade rather than an exact prediction. It’s also a useful way to see where your marks are going. Paper 2 makes up nearly two-thirds of the total, so a few extra marks there will move your grade far more than the same improvement in Paper 1.

Practising With SPM Biology Trial Papers

Knowing the SPM Biology format is a good start, but the quickest way to get comfortable with it is to sit full trial papers under timed conditions, then check every answer against the marking scheme. Pay attention to the keywords the scheme rewards, because the same terms come up year after year. If you’re short on time, focus your practice on Paper 2, since it carries the most marks.
